Exaro for Godot

Install the add-on, connect your AI, and let it build, play and check your game in the open editor.

Exaro for Godot is in beta. The Exaro for Godot page shows what it does and what it costs.

Requirements

  • Godot 4.7 or newer. On an older editor the add-on shows one message asking you to update and does nothing else.
  • Windows is the tested platform. macOS and Linux should work but are not yet tested.
  • For the Exaro dock: Claude Code, signed in with claude login. It uses your Claude subscription, with no API key.
  • Or any MCP client that can connect over HTTP and send a custom header.

Install

  1. Sign in and download the add-on from your library. It is free.
  2. Copy addons/exaro_studio into your project's addons/ folder.
  3. In Godot, open Project › Project Settings › Plugins and enable Exaro Studio. This also adds the ExaroGameBridge autoload, which lets the editor capture the running game. It does nothing in exported builds.
  4. Check the Output panel for [ExaroStudio] MCP server listening on http://127.0.0.1:8790/mcp.

Use the Exaro dock

The Exaro dock sits on the right of the editor. Type what you want in plain English and it carries it out in the open editor. It runs your own Claude Code, pointed only at this editor, with Claude Code's file and shell tools switched off so the work goes through the editor. Chat is free on every plan.

Connect another AI client

Each editor takes the first free port from 8790 to 8799, or the port in EX_MCP_PORT if you set one. Every request needs the X-Exaro-MCP-Token header. For Claude Code, add this to .mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "exaro-godot": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "http://127.0.0.1:8790/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "X-Exaro-MCP-Token": "<contents of .godot/exaro/mcp.token>"
      }
    }
  }
}

The token changes each time the editor starts, so paste the current contents of .godot/exaro/mcp.token. Each running editor also writes ~/.exaro/godot/<port>.json with its project and token file, so a script can find the right editor. That file is removed when the editor closes.

What your AI can do

The beta has 138 tools. Names match Exaro for Unreal wherever the idea is the same: a level is a scene and an actor is a node. Every edit goes through the editor's undo history, so Ctrl+Z works on your AI's changes.

AreaWhat it covers
Scenes and nodesCreate, open and save scenes. Spawn, move, change and delete nodes, including nested children in one call.
ScriptsCreate, read and edit GDScript. Every script is parse-checked, and an edit that does not parse is refused.
SeeingFrame a node, draw temporary markers and take screenshots of the editor viewport or the running game.
PlayingStart and stop the game, hold actions and keys, aim at a node, and inspect nodes while it runs.
AssetsSearch, import, rename, duplicate and delete. Renames carry references with them, and an asset in use will not be deleted.
2DTileSets, painted tile maps and SpriteFrames.
LookMaterials, particles, lighting, post-processing, fog, parallax, cameras and game feel.
Animation and UIAnimation clips, state machines, HUDs, menus, themes and signal connections.
GameplayPlayable characters, enemies, projectiles, trigger volumes, saves, data tables and dialogue.
LevelsBuild from a text layout, audit for problems with their fixes, take snapshots and verify navigation paths.
Exaro Drawing and SoundRun either app headless and import sprite sheets, tile maps and sound banks into the project.
MarketplaceSearch the public catalogue and import what you own.

Image generation (optional)

Image generation is off until you turn it on in the Exaro dock under Settings. Choose ComfyUI, free on your own GPU, or Gemini with your own Google API key, billed by Google per image. The Test button checks the setup without spending anything. Every other tool works without it.

Plans and licence

  • The core editor tools are free, and you do not need a licence key to use them.
  • Exaro Studio uses one licence key across every engine. Enter it on the dock's Licence page.
  • After activating, the add-on works offline for up to 30 days past its last check.
  • Only addons/exaro_studio/runtime/ may ship inside your exported games.

Not in the beta yet

  • Buying from the marketplace inside the editor.
  • Chat history across editor restarts.
  • Codex and Gemini in the dock. They can still connect as MCP clients where they support it.
  • Physics joints and ragdolls, shader graphs, level sequences, networking and terrain.

Troubleshooting

  • The add-on only asks you to update. Your editor is older than Godot 4.7.
  • A client connected yesterday but is refused today. The token changed when the editor restarted. Copy the new one from .godot/exaro/mcp.token.
  • A client reaches the wrong project. Each open editor has its own port. Check the Output panel, or the files in ~/.exaro/godot/.
  • The dock will not answer. Check that Claude Code is installed, then run claude login once.

Support

Licence keys, activation, refunds and bugs: [email protected]. Include your Godot version, your add-on version and, for a bug, the steps and the Output panel text.
