Exaro vs Hunyuan3D: open-weight image-to-3D or AI-built models?

Tencent's Hunyuan3D is a powerful open-weight image-to-3D model you can run yourself. Exaro Model has your own AI build rigged, part-based models in Blender. How they compare, including licensing.

Tencent's Hunyuan3D is one of the most important releases in AI 3D: an image-to-3D model with PBR textures whose weights and training code are public, so you can run it on your own GPU. Exaro Model works very differently. Here is a straight comparison.

Facts about Hunyuan3D are from Tencent's GitHub, Hugging Face and Tencent Cloud pages as of October 2026, linked below. Check them for the latest.

Two different approaches

Hunyuan3D generates. The open release (version 2.1) has two stages: a shape model that predicts geometry from an image and a paint model that produces PBR textures (GitHub). Newer versions (3.0 and later) are available through Tencent's hosted studio and cloud API, which add retopology, UV unwrapping, part splitting and auto-rigging (Tencent Cloud).

Exaro Model builds. It connects the AI you already use (Claude, Codex, Cursor or a local model) to Blender 5.2 over MCP. Your AI builds the object part by part while Exaro runs live model checks and fixes common faults. Construction kits supply the parts that have to fit, join or move, with their animation clips.

At a glance

Hunyuan3D (open 2.1) Exaro Model
How a model is made Predicted from an image Built in Blender by your AI, part by part
Runs where Your GPU (Linux, about 29 GB VRAM for shape and texture together, per the README), or Tencent's hosted studio and API Your machine with Blender, plus the Exaro Build Service for checks
Separate moving parts One mesh; part splitting in the hosted version Each part its own object, with pivots
Rigging Hosted studio only Humanoid rigging, plus construction kits for mechanical parts
Cost Open weights free; hosted API is credit-based (pricing) $29/month or $249/year; Studio $999/year (pricing)
Licence territory Excludes the EU, UK and South Korea (licence) Commercial use of everything you make, on every plan

Where Hunyuan3D shines

If you have a strong GPU and want full control, Hunyuan3D is remarkable: an open image-to-3D model with PBR textures that you can run offline, script and fine-tune. For researchers, pipeline engineers and anyone who wants to own the stack, nothing else open comes close. The hosted API is also inexpensive per asset.

Read the licence

Hunyuan3D's weights are free, but they come with conditions. The Tencent Hunyuan 3D 2.1 Community License states that it "does not apply in the European Union, United Kingdom and South Korea", and use outside its territory is unlicensed. Products with more than 1 million monthly active users must request a separate licence from Tencent. You also can't use Hunyuan3D or its outputs to improve any other AI model (licence). Tencent claims no rights in the outputs you generate.

If your studio or your players are in Europe or the UK, that's worth checking with whoever handles your legal.

Where generated meshes fall short in a game

Like other generators, Hunyuan3D's open models produce dense triangle meshes that usually need retopology, and users report fused parts and broken thin details (Scenario). The open models output a static mesh: no door, hinge or wheel, only the shape of one.

Exaro Model builds those as real parts, so your AI can rig them, check them and fix them, and the result exports as GLB or FBX ready for Unreal, Unity or Godot.

The WWII heavy bomber's turrets, bomb bay and controls, each on its own rig

Our studio builds with the tools behind Exaro Model. The WWII Heavy Bomber has 6,600 parts, with traversing turrets, opening bomb-bay doors and a crew interior you can walk through. (These capabilities reach Exaro Model as they pass our quality gates; the Exaro Model page lists what's in the product today.)

Using both

Generate a quick background prop with Hunyuan3D, build hero assets (anything the player opens, drives or looks at closely) with Exaro Model, and let Exaro Unreal place and test them in your level, all with the AI you already use.

The bottom line

  • Choose Hunyuan3D if you want an open model you can run and fine-tune yourself, have the GPU for it, and are outside the excluded territories.
  • Choose Exaro Model if you want rigged, part-based models that export cleanly to a game engine, without running a GPU stack, and a commercial licence that works everywhere you sell.
